Flues and Chimneys for Gas Stoves

Gas Stoves

We recently blogged about whether people would prefer a gas stove to a wood burning stove.  And to follow on from this blog and keep on the same subject, we wanted to provide our followers with some information on the chimneys and flue types you may need for a gas stove.

Why do I need to know about flues and chimneys?

You may have already decided to purchase a gas stove over a wood burning stove and this may have been for a variety of reasons. But before you go ahead and purchase a gas stove, you still need to know what kind of chimney or flue system you currently have, or you may not have one at all. This is extremely important as it will dictate which gas stove types you can purchase. If you have any queries regarding which chimney or flue type you have, contact us and we'll be happy to help.

Flue Liners Available at Bowland Stoves

Conventional Flue: brick/stone (class 1)

This is easily identified by seeing a chimney stack that rises above the roof line. It will also be topped with a traditional chimney pot or gas terminal. A brick/stone chimney uses natural circulation of heat to expel the waste.

Conventional Flue: Pre-fabricated

A pre-fabricated flue (class 1 & 2) is identified by seeing a metal flue cowl on the roof of your property. They vary in style or design but are generally the same and easily identified.

Conventional Flue: Pre-cast

A pre-cast flue (class 2) is usually found in modern homes. They normally take the appearance of a raised ridge tile on the roof.

Balanced Flue

If you already have a balanced flue or would like to install one, then no chimney is required. This type of flue uses a twin-wall pipe, which is a pipe from your stove to the outside through an external wall. These can be installed vertically through the roof of your property or horizontally through an external wall.

Powered Flue

A powered flue is basically an extractor unit that is mounted on an external wall. It is used to vent out the combustion gases. These types of flues are used when a stove is not installed against an external wall.
